VSR dominates Mugello Endurance Finale
**Beretta-Frassineti-Testa lead home VSR 1-2**
**Gilardoni-Michelotto-Zanon second overall and Pro-Am winners**
The 2025 Italian GT Endurance Championship concluded this weekend with a three-hour race at Mugello. Andrea Frassineti was back in the 63 Pro car, partnering Michele Beretta and Rodrigo Testa and there was an unchanged line-up for the 66 Pro-Am Lamborghini which was once more driven by Kevin Gilardoni, Mattia Michelotto and Ignazio Zanon. Despite all three qualifying sessions being red-flagged - Q3 just as Michelotto was about to take the pole – the VSR cars qualified on the second and third rows. Zanon took the start from row two in the 66 car and Frassineti started the 63 from right behind him.
Off the start Zanon slotted into fourth as Frassineti slipped down to eighth. The Safety Car was called out before even one lap was completed to retrieve the Ferraris of Gorini and Borelli from the gravel and racing resumed on lap five. At the restart Championship leader Mazzola forced his way past Zanon as Frassineti held eighth. The first pit window opened on lap twelve and Frassineti, who had been harrying Caglioni’s BMW, was the first of the VSR Lamborghinis to stop. Testa took over the 63 and a lap later Zanon, who had kept within a second of Mazzola, pitted the 66 for Gilardoni who exited in fourth place, two spots ahead of Testa. On lap eighteen the VSR cars both gained a place when Cola’s move on a backmarker resulted in a spin. A lap later Gilardoni took second from Raghunathan’s Ferrari and Testa quickly followed suit. After forty-five minutes of racing the Safety Car was called on track for the second time whilst the Mercedes of Farhadi was moved out of danger. The race was then red flagged for track repairs minutes before the second window was due to open. After a lengthy delay the race restarted with two laps behind the Safety Car before the track went green and simultaneously the pit window opened. The VSR cars stayed out as chaos reigned in the pits. Testa pitted on lap twenty-eight and Beretta jumped into the 63 and rejoined in second. A lap later Michelotto took over the 66 from Gilardoni and came out fourth, just behind Ferrari. As Beretta reeled in Colavita, leader of the race, Michelotto was all over the back of Ferrari. On lap thirty-eight Beretta caught and passed the leading Ferrari to move into first place. As Colavita dropped back into the clutches of Ferrari and Michelotto he was pushed wide by his team-mate and Michelotto slipped past into third place. The third pit window opened and Beretta pitted on lap forty-three, handing the race leading car to Testa. Two laps later Michelotto was in and Zanon jumped into the 66.
As the race entered the second half the VSR cars were out front, Testa leading Zanon who was heading the Pro-Am race. The pair had an eight second advantage over the Ferraris behind which increased during the fourth stint as backmarkers proved troublesome. The penultimate pit window opened on lap fifty-six and Zanon pitted for Michelotto halfway through the window. A lap later Testa passed the race-leading Lamborghini back to Beretta as the race moved into the final hour. Beretta and Michelotto enjoyed a trouble-free stint out front as they carved through traffic, increasing the gap to the third placed car to eighteen seconds. On lap seventy-four Beretta stopped and Frassineti took over the 63 car for the run to the flag. Michelotto came in a lap later and Gilardoni got behind the wheel of the Pro-Am leading 66, returning to the track just in front of Frassineti. The pair swapped places and then on lap seventy-seven the Safety Car came out for a third time, this time to extract Locanto from the gravel. Racing resumed with fifteen minutes to go and the two VSR Lamborghinis streaked away from the rest of the field to take a photo-finish 1-2 under the chequered flag.
